Growth Mindset

Working with youth has made me particularly aware with the idea of possessing a Growth Mindset. I used to be much less of an optimist and forward thinker before I started working with young people. "No we can't do that," and "I don't think that will work," were common phrases in my vocabulary not too long ago, but now I am realize how detrimental those ideologies are towards my individual successes and the successes of the people and projects I care about.  I used to think that the principles behind a Growth Mindset were corny and not achievable. I thought people those kind of people were dreamers in la-la-land, not grasping the context of their realities. However, it was not until I realized that my fixed mindset had a negative effect on my reality and my impact on the children who depend on me everyday that my behaviors were problematic. If I as an educator have a fixed mindset, how can any of my students learn and grow?  That was my big light bulb ...

Introduction to a Future Teacher

Hello! My name is Miranda. I am very excited to be in California Literature and I look forward to reading and engaging alongside you all this semester. Taking this class is kind of bittersweet as it is the last class I will be taking before I transfer to CSUEB in the Fall. I have been a student in the Contra Costa Community College District since Fall 2014 and I am finally at the home stretch of my journey to transfer. It is rewarding to know that I am almost finished but it does also feel like the end of an era. I was recently accepted at CSUEB to study English Language and Literacies with Teaching Credential. Because I am an English major, I wanted to find an interesting online course to take to satisfy this unit requirement. This class sounded really fun and unique. I enjoyed taking Literature of the Americas, so taking California Literature also sounded like a good class to...

My Favorite Place is the Happiest Place on Earth!

My favorite place in the entire world is Disneyland. Yes, Disneyland. The happiest place on earth! That place in Southern California where the sun shines bright, the churros are worth the five dollars, and grown women like me smile and pose with their favorite Disney princesses. Okay, I know what you’re thinking, this chick is one of those Disney people. I get it, we get a bad rap. You may think it’s childish...or too expensive...or both. I know, I know. But hear me out? Disneyland is, and always will be, my safe place. When I am there, I feel like I am home. A sigh of relief and relaxation pours over my body as soon as I enter the park. I always enter Disneyland on the right and exit through the left. Don’t ask me why, I don’t make the rules. It just feels best that way. I love Disneyland so much because it has always been a constant for me. It is the one place I know where I am going to have fun and be happy without worrying about anything else. The world, especially as of late, i...
